Full Details

Hospital de Formentera is a vital public healthcare institution managed by the Health Service of the Balearic Islands (IB-Salut). Located in Sant Francesc, it serves as the primary and only hospital for the island of Formentera, working in close coordination with the larger Hospital Can Misses in Ibiza. As a public facility, it provides 24/7 emergency medical services to residents and the massive influx of tourists who visit the island during the summer months. The hospital is specifically designed to handle a wide range of medical needs, from minor injuries to stabilization for critical care patients.

The emergency room (Urgencias) is the heart of the facility, operating around the clock with a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and support staff. The department is equipped to manage trauma, acute illnesses, and pediatric emergencies. For tourists, the hospital is an essential safety net, offering English-speaking staff and access to the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) system, which allows EU citizens to receive treatment under the same conditions as locals. For non-EU tourists, the hospital coordinates with international travel insurance providers to ensure proper billing and care.

In terms of medical specialties, Hospital de Formentera offers a comprehensive suite of services including internal medicine, general surgery, orthopedics and traumatology, pediatrics, and obstetrics/gynecology. The surgical department features modern operating rooms capable of performing both elective and emergency procedures. However, it is important to note that for highly complex neurosurgical or specialized cardiac interventions, the hospital maintains a protocol for rapid evacuation. A dedicated helipad on-site allows for air ambulance transfers to Ibiza or Mallorca within minutes, ensuring that critical care patients receive the highest level of intervention when needed.

The diagnostic capabilities of the hospital are robust, featuring advanced medical imaging technology. This includes high-resolution CT scans, X-rays, and ultrasound equipment, along with a fully automated clinical laboratory for rapid blood work and pathology results. While Formentera is a smaller island, the hospital’s infrastructure is surprisingly sophisticated, reflecting the Balearic government's commitment to high-quality healthcare in tourist zones.

For international patients, the hospital offers a 'Patient Liaison' approach. While it may not have a dedicated 'International Department' in the way large private metropolitan hospitals do, its staff is deeply accustomed to treating foreign nationals. Translators are often available or accessible via tele-translation services to bridge communication gaps. The hospital is strategically located near the main tourist hubs of Es Pujols and Sant Francesc, making it easily accessible via the island's primary road network. During the peak season, the hospital also works closely with local ambulance services (061) to manage road traffic accidents and water-related emergencies common in the Mediterranean. Its experience with travel emergencies—ranging from jellyfish stings and heatstroke to more severe incidents like scooter accidents—makes it a highly reliable facility for any visitor to the Pityusic Islands.
