  • What Customers Say

The 2.6-star rating reflects a common trend for public hospitals in Spain, where administrative delays often overshadow clinical quality. Common Praise: Patients frequently mention the high level of professionalism among the medical staff and the modern, clean facilities of the 'new' hospital building. Some reviewers highlight life-saving interventions in the ER. Common Complaints: The most frequent frustrations involve long wait times in the emergency department, difficulty reaching specific departments by phone, and perceived 'coldness' in administrative procedures. Regarding mental health specifically, some users note the bureaucracy involved in getting follow-up appointments, though the crisis care is generally regarded as robust. Overall Sentiment: Mixed; while the clinical care is respected, the 'patient experience' in terms of speed and communication is a frequent pain point.

    About This Practice

  • Hospital Can Misses is the flagship public hospital of Ibiza, managed by the Servei de Salut de les Illes Balears (IB-Salut). While it is a general hospital, it houses the island's most comprehensive Mental Health Department, catering to acute psychiatric crises, mood disorders, and long-term psychological support.
  • For tourists and expats, it is the primary destination for any health emergency that falls under the coverage of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or reciprocal state agreements.
  • The hospital is particularly vital for mental health crises, as it possesses the most secure and specialized inpatient psychiatric unit on the island.
  • Facility & Team

  • The hospital underwent a massive expansion and modernization completed around 2014, resulting in a large, bright, and technologically advanced campus.
  • The mental health team consists of state-certified psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychiatric nurses, and social workers.
  • As a public teaching hospital, the staff are highly qualified, having passed rigorous state examinations (MIR/PIR), ensuring a high standard of clinical knowledge.
  • What to Expect During Your Visit

  • Emergencies: Patients arriving with a mental health crisis enter through the general 'Urgencias' (Emergency) department. After an initial triage, a duty psychiatrist is called for evaluation.
  • Wait Times: Being a public hospital, wait times in the ER can be significant (several hours) for non-life-threatening issues.
  • Environment: The psychiatric ward is a secure area designed for patient safety, while outpatient consultations are held in a more traditional office setting within the hospital complex.
  • Location & Accessibility

  • Located on the outskirts of Ibiza Town (Eivissa), it is easily accessible from the main highway (E-20).
  • Public Transport: Several bus lines (L10, L12A, L13) stop directly at or near the hospital.
  • Accessibility: The facility is 100% wheelchair accessible with wide corridors, elevators, and designated parking spaces.
  • Why Tourists Choose Them

  • The primary reason is the acceptance of the EHIC, which allows EU citizens to receive treatment under the same conditions as locals.
  • For serious psychiatric episodes involving safety concerns, Can Misses is the only facility on the island with the legal and medical infrastructure to provide involuntary admission or intensive stabilization.
  • Safety & Standards

  • The hospital adheres to strict EU and Spanish healthcare regulations. It follows standardized protocols for patient safety, medication management, and psychiatric intervention.
  • Booking & Practical Info

  • Emergencies: No appointment needed; walk-in 24/7.
  • Outpatient: Requires a referral from a primary care physician (GP) at a local 'Centro de Salud'.
  • Costs: Free for those with a Spanish social security card or a valid EHIC. Tourists without these will be billed at standard public rates, which are often lower than private clinics but still require payment or travel insurance reimbursement.
